£2.9m Extension at Gatehouse School in East London Grows Over Easter

The project at Gatehouse School is phase 2 of the redevelopment. ARJ secured this £2.9m phase on a single stage competitive tender. The project sees the vertical extension of 9 classrooms, as well as the redevelopment of the nursery to form 3 further classrooms, additionally we completed the work from a previous phase.

Works started on site on 11th April; the beginning of the Easter holidays. ARJ then went about a planned work programme over three weeks. This included:

  • Remodelling an old classroom area to form a temporary home for the nursery
  • Stripping out the nursery, removing the temporary ceiling and removing a crash-deck above
  • Adapting the scaffolding; to suit phase 2 of the works
  • Design, fabrication and installation of the steelwork for three new storeys on top of the existing school
  • Segregating the construction site from the operations of the school, whilst maintaining fire routes and alarm systems

In order to achieve this programme of works we set-up the crane in the car park. The materials were lifted and connected to form the structure of the extension.

The key was to ensure no disruption to the operations of the school. This was possible through communications throughout and planning of the works in advance.
