ARJ deliver £14m Brunel project

ARJ have completed the £14m refurbishment and extension of the Wilfred Brown building at Brunel University in London.

This prestigious project involved a substantial refurbishment and extension of the existing four-storey building, to provide a modern and inspiring new home for the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences.
The old faculty initially comprised of five departments, located in multiple locations across the university campus. We delivered the client’s vision to create a collocated faculty with better adjacency to the wider College facilities, and the adjacent Michael Sterling building.
To deliver this objective, our works comprised:

    • Stripping back the building to the structural frame and upgrading the external envelope with a new solar controlled, sawtooth façade design to enhance the building’s aesthetics, performance and efficiency
    • Improving and reconfiguring the internal layout, with new stair cores, circulation space, and an atrium/entrance for students, staff and visitors
    • Integrating the Wilfred Brown building with the adjacent Michael Stirling building
    • Providing a new security annex and command facility which will serve the whole university

Creating modern internal spaces to meet the diverse needs of the combined faculty, including:

    • Research laboratories
    • Computer laboratories
    • Meeting rooms
    • Administration offices
    • Welfare facilities (kitchens & WCs)

“This was a particularly challenging project and the Directors of ARJ co- operated with the Estates team to achieve the University’s aims”

David Bannister
