Maltby & Fendall Street Tops Out!

Our Fendall Street site played host to a topping out ceremony in April, with invited guests from clients – @southwarkcouncil, employer’s agent – @pellings_rsk and clerk of works – @silver__dcc.

The completed scheme will deliver a total of 40 new council homes over two sites on the St Saviours Estate in Southwark. Maltby Street will be known as the Manze apartments and comprise 24 flats, with Fendall Street, newly named Burgwin comprising 16 flats. Both blocks will be five storey and offer ground floor wheelchair-adapted apartments, outdoor play spaces and communal gardens.

Councillor Darren Merrill, who is working to deliver the council’s housing strategy, made a short speech on behalf of Southwark Council before being joined by Councillor Emily Hickson to lay bricks using a commemorative trowel presented to Darren by our site management trainee Brenda Obwona.

Speaking to the guests Darren said,

“I am delighted to be here today to celebrate building works reaching the roof level at these two exciting new developments. These 40 new council homes across both sites will be a real asset for the local community, helping to tackle the housing crisis and enhancing the surrounding area. I am proud that we are being innovative and creative in the way we use our spaces to support our local communities to thrive.”

ARJ operations director Paul Hunt also made a speech and thanked Southwark Council for the opportunity to deliver homes for the local community.

“Affordable housing is in critical need in our society. ARJ Construction are proud to be working with Southwark Council to deliver these high-quality new homes for many individuals and families who need affordable housing.”

As part of our social value commitment, we always find ways to give back to the local community and what better way than using reclaimed materials? The site team used some surplus timber to construct two planters to donate to the community of Southwark.

Maltby Street is due to be completed in December 2023 with Fendall Street following in early 2024.
